Reviews:

Something old, something new for Stones

by Steve Hochman

At their final Hollywood Bowl show on Tuesday, the Rolling Stones treated a star-studded audience with two songs the band has never performed live before — one new and one very old. The latter was an acoustic version of "As Tears Go By," which Mick Jagger introduced as one of the first songs he and Keith Richards wrote together but one that they "gave away." The ballad was a 1964 hit for Marianne Faithfull.

The other first-timer was "It Won't Take Long," which capped a run of three straight songs from the new "A Bigger Bang" album during the show's first half after "Rough Justice" and "Rain Fall Down," a stronger emphasis on current material than has been standard through the Stones' tour that began in August.

Jagger wryly noted the celebrity presence (which included Jack Nicholson, Johnny Depp, Jim Carrey, Clint Eastwood and Bruce Willis) in several onstage comments during the frisky performance.

"Got a lot of famous people here tonight," he said at one point. "Want to thank them all for coming. Too numerous to mention, but they'll all be on stage for the 'Let It Be' finale."

He also commented that the heavy showbiz representation in the audience added a certain pressure to shows here.

"I always feel like we're auditioning," he said of playing in Los Angeles. "But we always get called back."
