City awaits Jagger and friends
by Lawrence Poole
GOLDEN oldies The Rolling Stones will finally roll into Manchester on Friday,
their first gig in the city for 13 years.
The show at the M.E.N. Arena is the latest date on the band’s huge world
tour to promote greatest hits album Forty Licks, which marks their fortieth
anniversary as a band.
The tour has already seen them put on performances in the Far East and
America.
The band arrived home at the end of last month for a string of dates at some
of the UK’s biggest venues, but got off to a bad start when the opening show
at Twickenham was cancelled due to Mick Jagger having a sore throat.

Since then though, the band has wowed the crowds with three shows in London,
including a star-studded bash at the London Astoria on August 27.
They will arrive in Manchester following dates in Glasgow, before flying to
Dublin and then back to London for more shows at Wembley Arena.
The Stones first played in Manchester in 1964 and last appeared at Maine Road
in July 1990.
It is the latest in a long line of high profile gigs at the venue.
Earlier this year former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney played two sell-out gigs at
the Arena and David Bowie is set to play the Arena in November.
The Stones will be supported by Charlatan front man Tim Burgess, who will be
singing tracks from his debut album I Believe.
