Soundchecks:
Hi,
We're huge fans from Detroit and we made the trip down to Columbus, as we
usually do.
Last time for 40 Licks, we actually made it in for the Stones soundcheck (they
played Rocks Off, No Expectations and Mannish Boy on the small stage)
Of course we were hoping lightning would strike twice and we would see the
soundcheck on Sept 24, 2005. No such luck, but we did HEAR the soundcheck.
Would like to report that we heard the Stones through an obscure exit door and
we were blown away to hear them play SHE SAW ME COMING and RAIN FALL DOWN!!!!!!
SSMC was excellent and happens to be a favorite of ours. Very straight
forward and rocking version.
RFD was great, too. It sounded like they were still trying to feel their
way around it. Charlie was trying out some drum grooves and it sounded as
if Ronnie was tenatively throwing out some funky chords. Although they
were testing the waters at this point, we guessed it was Rain Fall Down.
Then they went into it full force. It was such a groove. After, there
was plenty of talking, but we couldn't make out what was being said. Then it was
over.
If they played a third song, maybe it preceeded SSMC and we missed it.
At that point we wondered if we would hear some of these tunes at the show that
night. I found it hard to believe that they would drop Rough, Oh No and
Infamy.
In the end, we'll have to wait to see them perform those new songs, but we had
an extra treat hearing them.
As usual, the Stones were brilliant. Having only seen the Detroit show
this tour, we can only compare the two, but it is safe to say that the Stones
were really enjoying themselves in Columbus. They were loose from a week
off and having a blast.
How about SWAY?!! Absoutely stunning. The bonus of the night!
Lastly, Ronnie was grinning from ear to ear for the entire show.
There was a woman with a young girl in the first row who Ron was blowing kisses
to and mouthing "I love you" all show. Was this his daughter?
Anyway, our seats were the best in the house: Lower level, right next to the
stage, about three or four rows up. Perfect. Perfect to witness some
guy jump onto Micks side ramp and try to run onto the stage. A roadie or
security guy tackled him right in front of Lisa. The guy was not giving
up, but he was wrestled off the stage between Bernard and Lisa. Scary.
Did want to harm anyone or just get a hug from Keef?
Come back to Detroit, boys. You got us rocking!
Brian Felhandler, Todd Kroll and Stasho!
