From Record Collector magazine (Jan. 2001 issue p.
165):
"Stones Planet (4-issue sub DKK 220 or $ 30 to Rolling Stones Fan
Club Office, Box 280, DK 1502 Copenhagen V., Denmark):
The official fanzine of the UK/US/Scandinavian Stones offices is
three-dozen b&w pages with smattering of colour, easy to read and with
reasonable pictures of the grand ol' stagers.
An interview with piano player Chuck Leavell nestles next
to a tribute to the sixth Stone, Ian Stewart, there's bio info on Charlie
Watts and Jim Keltner, plus track-by-track commentary on their latest
Project. The RS European tour of 1970 comes in for fan reminiscence,
there's the second part of an interview with Keef in 1998, a look behind
the scenes of the Stones road crew, and Mick's recipe for shrimp curry is
served up.
Finally the cleverly-named Mike Hunt band are featured,
with its female crew mimicking the Stones and their material in suitably
close-to-the-bone fashion."
Thanks Record Collector for the review of our last Spring

Sheryl Crow getting Stoned with Keith Richards
By Dean Goodman
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rocker Sheryl
Crow, who has performed on stage with her idols, the Rolling Stones,
on many occasions, said she hopes to collaborate with the group's
guitarist, Keith
Richards, for her next album.
Crow revealed the potential pairing Wednesday night, backstage at the
Grammy Awards, and Richards' manager, Jane Rose, confirmed the essential
details when contacted for comment by Reuters the next day.
Also backstage at the Grammys (news
- web
sites), R&B producer Rodney Jerkins said his plans to work on a
few tracks for a Mick
Jagger solo project have been put on hold because he had heard Jagger
was focusing on a Stones record. Jerkins denied some recent reports that
he would work on the Stones album.
Crow said the seeds for the Richards collaboration were planted last
October, when they were riding around in a limo together after the VH1/Vogue
Fashion Awards in New York City.
``He played this song that I think that he had written perhaps for the
last record (1997's ``Bridges to Babylon'') and they didn't put it on the
record, and I've been working on him ever since to let me record it, and
have him record it with me and, I think he's going to do it,'' she told
reporters.
Crow declined to reveal the song's title, both at the news conference and
several hours later when badgered by Reuters at a party. She is halfway
through recording a follow-up to her last studio album, 1998's ``Globe
Sessions,'' and hopes to have it in stores by the end of summer.
According to Rose, Richards actually played Crow several unfinished and
untitled songs he had composed recently. The two musicians planned to get
together at some stage to see if they could knock the tunes into shape,
Rose added.
With regard to a possible Stones album, Rose said nothing had been decided
because the group's members have been busy with their own pursuits. She
expected a clearer picture would emerge in the next few months.
Richards and wife Patti attended the premiere Wednesday night for the
third season of HBO's mob drama ``The Sopranos (news
- Y!
TV Coverage),'' having just returned to their Connecticut estate from
their home in Jamaica, Rose added. Richards is friends with guitarist
''Little'' Steven van Zandt, a co-star on the show.
Crow, who has cited the Stones' 1969 opus ``Let It Bleed'' as her favorite
album, has both opened for and performed with the Stones, most recently
during the U.K. dates of their 1999 European tour. Richards returned the
favor the same year, duetting with her on the Stones track ``Happy''
during Crow's concert in Central Park, a gig she subsequently released on
CD. |

Jerry and Jagger find satisfaction an ocean apart
LONDON (Reuters) - Rolling Stone Mick
Jagger and his former wife, Jerry
Hall, appear to have finally consigned their 22-year relationship to
history -- but in sharply contrasting styles.
While British newspapers carried pictures of Jagger, 57, dancing the night
away with a string of young women at show business parties in London over
the last week, Hall was featured enjoying a quiet break on the other side
of the Atlantic with steady boyfriend George Waud.
``They are both happy doing what they are doing. They are going out and
having a good time again,'' an unidentified friend of the pair was quoted
as saying by the top-selling Sun tabloid.
Hall and Jagger's stormy relationship ended in 1999 after Brazilian (news
- web
sites) model Luciana Morad disclosed she had given birth to a son by
Jagger.
The revelation was the final straw for Texas supermodel Hall, who filed
for divorce from the Lothario rocker.
Jagger and Hall, who have four children, remained close, however, and
were often pictured out on the town together. Jagger only moved out of the
marital home late last year -- and then to a neighboring property --
fueling rumours of an eventual reconciliation. But in the words of an old
Rolling Stones hit, it's all over now.
Hall, 44, who has been dating Waud for the past 18 months, said in January
that she was very happy with the 33-year-old, Los Angeles-based British
film producer.
``He is way, way, way too young for me, but there it is. Go with the flow,''
Hall told Britain's Sunday Telegraph. |

From Yahoo news: Long-misplaced tapes recorded by the late John
Phillips that feature duets with the Rolling
Stones' Mick
Jagger and Keith
Richards, as well as contributions by fellow Stones Mick
Taylor and Ron Wood, will finally be released almost 30 years
after they were recorded. Pay, Pack And Follow is out in stores
Tuesday (April 24), but sadly Phillips died on March 18 at the age of
65.
The tapes were discovered last year at a Brooklyn, New York,
storage facility, having survived an interesting journey over the
years. The nine tracks were recorded in London, Montreux, and New
York, but the master tapes were lost, as Phillips explained: "I
was traveling on the QEII and somehow my luggage didn't get aboard.
The tapes traversed the world tucked away in cargo. Two years later a
gentleman called asking if I was the John Phillips who had left seven
reels of 24-track recording tape behind."
After their journey and subsequent discovery, the tapes were again
mislaid, after which they were uncovered beneath a pile of tires and
old farm tools in the barn at Richards's home in England. The final
leg of the tapes' incredible journey ended with a call from a storage
company asking Phillips "if I was by any chance interested in
some tapes that came to them by messenger with my return address
attached. I had them Fed Ex the tapes, and from that moment on I slept
with them under my bed."
All of the songs on Pay, Pack And Follow were written entirely by
Phillips, and for fans expecting a gentle, folksy album, brace
yourselves. Phillips said of the songs on the album: "This
recording is very raw, very rock 'n' roll. The performances by Mick
and Keith are so spontaneous and brilliant."

Stones' Svengali Recounts Street Fighting Days
By Dean Goodman
BOGOTA, Colombia (Reuters) - Long before gun-toting rap stars roamed
America, the first manager of the Rolling Stones was terrorizing ``Swinging''
London, throwing errant journalists out of windows and others off
bridges.
Accompanied by a thuggish bodyguard, teenage pop Svengali Andrew Loog
Oldham was said to be quite the rogue 40 years ago: Sporting a cape, he
would careen around the city in his Mini Cooper, speakers blaring from
the roof of the tiny car.
This is not all completely true -- especially the bit about the cape --
but the anecdotes and rumors metamorphosed into ''facts'' over the years,
a consequence of the hype and mystique Oldham engineered on behalf of
his rabble-rousing charges.
Now 57, he is setting the record straight in his memoirs, ''Stoned''
(St. Martin's Press, U.S.; Secker & Warburg, U.K.), which details
the early days of the so-called greatest rock 'n' roll band in the
world. The star character is not Mick Jagger or Keith Richards, it is
Oldham -- an arrogant genius redeemed by self-effacing British sense of
humor.
``I would hope that (Stones guitarist) Keith Richards would turn around
and say, 'Well finally, Andrew's working on his favorite act --
himself.' Which I am,'' Oldham said in an interview in his three-story
Bogota apartment.
Oldham managed the Stones from 1963 to 1967 (in partnership with the
late Eric Easton through 1965) and produced all their records during
that period, including the hits everyone knows and loves to this day:
``(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction,'' ``19th Nervous Breakdown,'' ``Mother's
Little Helper,'' ``Play With Fire,'' ''Paint It, Black,'' ``Get Off Of
My Cloud,'' and others.
More importantly, practiced at the art of deception, he transformed
the nice, middle-class boys into the anti-Beatles. To underscore their
outlaw image, he invented the line, ``Would you let your daughter go out
with a Rolling Stone?''
Rock 'N' Roll Urchins
These days, with the Beatles bigger than ever 30 years after breaking
up, he still considers the Stones to be underdogs, albeit filthy rich
ones.
``We're always gonna be the bad boys. We're always gonna be urchins,''
he said. ``I had to wait until the Rolling Stones had their last hit
before my early work was recognized.''
After splitting with the Stones in 1967 -- a case of mutual boredom --
Oldham essentially disappeared. He did more drugs than any of his
proteges, married a Colombian film star, moved to Bogota, got sober six
years ago and became a Scientologist.
True to its subtitle, ``A Memoir of London in the 1960s,'' ''Stoned''
focuses on life in what would briefly become the hippest city in the
world. Tantalizingly it ends in 1964, after the Stones had released
their first album but before they had set foot in the United States. Two
sequels are planned.
Richards and bandmates did not cooperate as their relations with
Oldham are distant. But singer Mick Jagger's publicist sidekick, Tony
King, was one of 70 contributors to supply anecdotes, giving the book a
hint of official recognition.
Other contributors include entertainment impresario Don Arden, Who
guitarist Pete Townshend and former Led Zeppelin bass player John Paul
Jones.
Just 19 when he signed the band, Oldham already boasted a colorful
resume, including stints doing publicity for fashion designer Mary Quant
and Beatles manager Brian Epstein.
Although he was younger, the Stones warmed to his gung-ho ways, which
were inspired by American gangster movies. And, inspired by American
producers like Phil Spector and Bob Crewe, Oldham secured a lucrative
recording contract, something Epstein did not initially do for the
Beatles.
All this would have been pointless if Oldham had not forced blues
aficionados Jagger and Richards to write their own songs, instead of
``sparring with (covers band) the Swinging Blue Jeans for some black
guy's song that hadn't been recorded to death.''
He got a songwriting credit on ``As Tears Go By,'' one of the duo's
first tunes, originally a 1964 Marianne Faithfull hit.
By his own admission, Oldham knew nothing about producing -- he tried
to plug an electric guitar into the wall -- but he was a quick learner
and eager collaborator, and the records ''fell together ... Next one,
next one, next one.''
Jumpin' Jack Cash
The fruits of those labors -- gold records galore -- adorn his
apartment, which he shares with his wife, Esther Farfan, their teenage
son Maximillian and beagle Ruby.
He does not need to work because he has a modest financial
participation in publishing revenues generated by the Stones catalog up
to and including the 1971 album ``Sticky Fingers.'' When director Martin
Scorsese crammed a bunch of Stones songs into the 1995 film ``Casino,''
Oldham hit the jackpot.
He is already putting the finishing touches on a sequel, ''2Stoned,''
expected to come out in Britain by fall 2002. It will trace the band's
slow conquest of America through 1967.
``If the first book is in some ways an applause to the dream of
America, then '2Stoned' is the reality. 'Stoned' is like 'Little Women;'
'2Stoned' is like 'In Cold Blood,''' he warned.
A third book, ``Stoned Free,'' will trace his downfall when he became
a drug addict and smuggler. Now a bit of a health freak, he is hooked on
a few TV shows: the ``Law & Order'' franchise, ``Homicide'' and ``CSI:
Crime Scene Investigation.''
Which brings us to his own criminal endeavors. ``Stoned'' attempts to
correct some myths, but he inadvertently adds to the pile by including
some of his contributors' dubious tales.
For the record, he does cop to barging into a critic's office along
with his bodyguard, Reg ``The Butcher'' King and threatening to
defenestrate the hapless scribe. And when a record company employee
leaked the titles of the next Stones album to a music paper, Oldham and
King threw him in a car and threatened to drop him into the Thames
wearing concrete boots.
``It's all theatrics,'' he now explains. ``You do what you do to keep
yourself energized, to make every day count. Remember, it was us against
them. We all have our own devices.''

Bluesman John Lee Hooker Dies at 80
By KIM CURTIS, Associated Press Writer
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Veteran bluesman John Lee Hooker, whose foot
stompin' and gravelly voice electrified audiences and inspired several
generations of musicians, died Thursday. He was 80.
Hooker died at home in his sleep, said his agent, Mike Kappus.
Hooker died of natural causes with friends and family near, Kappus
said.
During a more than six-decade-long music career, the veteran blues
singer from the Mississippi Delta estimated he recorded more than 100
albums. Some of his better-known songs include ``Boogie Chillen,''
``Boom Boom'' and ``I'm In The Mood.''
Throughout it all, Hooker's music remained unchanged. His rich and
sonorous voice, full of ancient hurt, and his brooding and savage
style remained hypnotic but unpredictable. To the strains of his own
guitar, he sang of loneliness and confusion. Neither polished nor
urbane, his music was raw, primal emotion.
His one-chord boogie compositions and rhythmic guitar work were a
distinctive sound that influenced rock 'n' rollers as well as rhythm
and blues musicians.
In 1991, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Among those whose music drew heavily on Hooker's style are Van
Morrison, the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie
Raitt and ZZ Top. In 1961, the then-unknown Rolling Stones opened for
him on a European tour; he also shared a bill that year with Bob Dylan
at a club in New York.
Even in the '90s, when his fame was sealed and he was widely
recognized as one of the grandfathers of pop music, Hooker remained a
little in awe of his own success, telling The Times of London,
``People say I'm a genius but I don't know about that.''
Like many postwar bluesmen, Hooker got cheated by one fly-by-night
record producer after another, who demanded exclusivity or didn't pay.
Hooker fought back by recording with rival producers under a slew of
different names: Texas Slim, John Lee Booker, John Lee Cocker, Delta
John, Birmingham Sam and the Boogie Man, among others.
Hooker's popularity grew steadily as he rode the wave of rock in
the '50s into the folk boom of the '60s. In 1980, he played a street
musician in ``The Blues Brothers'' movie. In 1985, his songs were used
in Steven Spielberg's film, ``The Color Purple.''
Hooker hit it big again in 1990 with his album ``The Healer,''
featuring duets with Carlos Santana, Raitt and Robert Cray. It sold
1.5 million copies and won him his first Grammy Award, for a duet with
Raitt on ``I'm in the Mood.''
Several more albums followed, including one recorded to celebrate
his 75th birthday, titled ``Chill Out.''
Born in Clarksdale, Miss., in 1920, Hooker was one of 11 children
born to a Baptist minister and sharecropper who discouraged his son's
musical bent.
His stepfather taught him to play guitar. By the time Hooker was a
teen-ager, he was performing at local fish fries, dances and other
occasions.
Hooker hit the road to perform by the age of 14. He worked odd jobs
by day and played small bars at night in Memphis, then Cincinnati and
finally Detroit in 1943.
In Detroit, he was discovered and recorded his first hit, ``Boogie
Chillen,'' in 1948.
``I don't know what a genius is,'' he told the London newspaper.
``I know there ain't no one ever sound like me, except maybe my
stepfather. You hear all the kids trying to play like B.B. (King), and
they ain't going to because, ooh, he's such a fine player and a very
great man. But you never hear them even try and sound like John Lee
Hooker.''
``All these years, I ain't done nothin' different,'' he added. ``I
been doing the same things as in my younger days, when I was coming
up, and now here I am, an old man, up there in the charts. And I say,
well, what happened? Have they just thought up the real John Lee
Hooker, is that it? And I think, well, I won't tell nobody else! I
can't help but wonder what happened.''
In his later years, Hooker laid back and enjoyed his success. He
recorded only occasionally; he posed for blue jeans and hard liquor
ads. He played benefits from time to time, but mostly performed in
small clubs, dropping in unannounced.
Mostly, though, he hung out with friends and family at his homes in
Redwood City, south of San Francisco, and Long Beach, watching
baseball and enjoying a fleet of expensive cars.
