Regina
Stones shows set new Canadian benchmark
Yes, the arrival of the Rolling Stones and their Bigger Bang tour to Regina
last fall was a big deal. On Friday, we found out just how big.
The two concerts in October were the top grossing concerts of all time
in Canada. In a news release from IPSCO Place, the two shows at Mosaic Stadium
raked in $12,011,124 -- this is according to the music industry trade magazine,
Pollstar. A total of 80,583 people attended the concerts.
What's more, the magazine says the two Regina shows are the only Canadian
events to make the top-40 North American grossing concerts of all
time.

London Roundhouse, March 14. 1971
from our British member David Page we have this story worth the front site:
The Rolling Stones at the Roundhouse, Chalk Farm, London.
Firstly I have to tell you about the Roundhouse. It was built as a railway
engine turning shed and is situated quite near Hampstead. I was born in
Hampstead and my mother always reminded me that she used to push me down
Haverstock Hill that is the link road between the two places. Camden Town is
also quite near.
Anyway, I digress. When the electrification of the railway came about the
Roundhouse was no longer required for the purposes for which it was built.
However, rather than pull it town and build a block of flats the building was
preserved and turned into a theatre. The acoustics were brilliant and I guess
the capacity was around 2500. Whilst the various bands were playing you also had
the facility of the bar, some great food, and if you didn't like a particular
group there was even films being shown in a self contained area. A great venue,
the like of which we will never see again.
In the late 1960's / early 1970's regular rock shows were held there on
Sunday afternoons. It alternated between 'Evensong' and 'Implosion'. There was
always some amazing music and a really friendly atmosphere. The DJ (they played
records between bands) always announced next week's bands over the P.A. system
mid way through the afternoon. On March 7th I was stunned when he
announced that The Rolling Stones would be playing there in a week's time and
that tickets were on sale in the Box office. This meant that the regulars had
the opportunity to buy the tickets before the general public and this seemed a
pretty fair way of doing things. Tickets were limited to two per person, I
bought two for the afternoon show and my friend bought two for the evening show.
It was like striking gold. Tickets were £1 each.
So on March 14th we made our way up to London, feeling so lucky
that we were about to see one of the greatest live bands ever in such a small
venue. The short tour had been sort of been labelled 'The Goodbye to the U.K
tour' as obviously the boys had decided to quit the U.K. for the South of France
for tax purposes. I can't remember the exact set list but I'm sure they opened
with Jumping Jack Flash. Live With Me, Stray Cat Blues, Love In Vain, Midnight
Rambler, Bitch, Honky Tonk Woman, Satisfaction, Brown Sugar, Street Fighting Man
and Let It Rock - I'm sure they played all those. Mick Taylor was on 2nd
lead guitar and I remember Mick Jagger wearing a six colour baseball cap.
Support band was The Groundhogs.
Rock bands continued to play at the
Roundhouse until the late 1970's when the local residents started to complain
about the noise levels. After this the control of the building was continually
changing with either The Roundhouse Trust or Camden Council taking over
responsibility. For a while the building was used to stage some of the annual
Promenade concerts and as a theatre, staging various plays. Then it closed
completely for a time and fell into disrepair. However over the last couple of
years it was completely renovated and has actually started to stage musical
events again. Early this year The Pink Fairies played a concert, you can't get
much louder than the Fairies so obviously they have had the place soundproofed.
Last week a charity concert on behalf of the late Jim Capaldi of Traffic took
place, Paul Weller, Steve Winwood, Bill Wyman and Pete Townsend were just some
of the stars who took to the stage.
I haven't been to the new Roundhouse, but I will never forget how lucky I was
to have been there on March 14th 1971.

10 Commandments: Mick Jagger
Don't get trapped in the past.
- The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it,
but I don't want to be its prisoner either.
Always check your facts.
- People don't bother to check anything any more - especially in my
business.
- They just like to speculate in print.
- Get into the habit of fact-checking!
Anything worth doing is worth overdoing.
Hang on to your dreams.
- Lose your dreams and you might lose your mind.
Always be prepared to listen to people's points of view.
- But when they are not working, you have got to speak up as well.
- I think social comment is very much part of what the Rolling Stones have
always done.
Enjoying life is not an exclusive preserve of young people.
- It is far better to be out with beautiful people than be an old fart in
the pub talking about what you were like in the Sixties.
Don't become completely isolated.
- I need the energy from other people.
You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you just
might find you get what you need.
- These words from our 1969 album Let It Bleed say it all.
When you start a new project, you are always learning something.
- I am always finding something new when I start something new.
Don't be satisfied with your lot, aim for something better.
- Like I famously sang: 'I can't get no satisfaction.'

The life, loves, and hell of
Marianne Faithfull
By JENNY JOHNSTON with thanks to
Francisca Castro
There is a rather tedious comeuppance to be had when you've
deliberately lived every day as if it were your last. Marianne Faithfull
realised somewhere around her 60th birthday that she might have made a slight
miscalculation.
"The problem with living life as if there is no tomorrow is
that you get to this age and realise that it simply isn't true," she admits
ruefully. She means she "forgot" to sort out the pension plan.
"Saving simply wasn't part of the equation. Money didn't
matter to me - so much so that I don't own anything. I haven't got a house or a
mortgage or a car. I'm still renting - at 60!"
She laughs that famous throaty laugh, the legacy of this most
rock 'n' roll of lives. Read the entire story here

Music Review: Sax player swings the Stones
By Rick Nowlin, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Ever wonder how Rolling Stones songs would sound in a jazz context?
Thanks to Stones backup saxophonist Tim Ries, who switched between tenor and
soprano, the audience at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild got a chance to find
out Saturday night.
Truth be told, they sounded pretty good -- not a clunker among the repertoire
-- and the band was first-rate as well.
Perhaps not surprisingly, the "Rolling Stones Project" opened with
the classic "Satisfaction," Ries starting out on piano and later
playing the theme on tenor but -- as jazz arrangements often do -- substituting
chords just to spice things up a bit. "Gimme Shelter" contained all
kinds of colors, with a rubato, a cappella opening from bassist Thomas Bramerie
and a languid solo from trombonist and fellow Stones band member Michael Davis,
who throughout the evening displayed about as much range on his horn as Ries's
tenor.
Ries and company switched up "Angie" into Indian-influenced 15/8
meter -- that version will be included on an upcoming fall release of
Ries-inspired world-beat arrangements of Stones music -- that slightly recalled
Spyro Gyra and allowed drummer Clarence Penn to stretch out a bit.
Guest vocalist Bernard Fowler nearly stole the show with dramatic renditions
of several songs.
Arguably the best of them was a swing, then shuffle rendition of "Honky
Tonk Woman," with Fowler actually harking back to the Stones' confessed
roots in Chicago blues. Guitarist Ben Monder contributed an amazing solo
comprising almost exclusively chords.
Fowler also carried "Ruby Tuesday," accompanied only by Monder and
Ries, on soprano; and "Wild Horses."
I especially enjoyed the heretofore obscure, Keith Richards-penned, midtempo
"Baby, Break It Down," delivered by Fowler and with Ries adding
background vocals.
The closing number was a funk-flavored untitled Ries original that
nevertheless recalled the Crusaders, what with the frontline of Ries and Davis
at one point trading off toward the end.
The encore offered a finger-style classical opening courtesy of Monder and
became "Paint It Black" in 7/8 meter.
My only complaint was the overall sound -- it seemed that Penn overpowered
everyone else, especially Monder, at times.

Mick at funeral
Led Zeppelin didn't reunite, but plenty of Ahmet Ertegun's other disciples
were more than happy to take the stage together.
Rock icons such as Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Stevie Nicks, and Crosby,
Stills, Nash & Young gathered at New York's Lincoln Center Tuesday to pay
tribute to the Atlantic Records chairman, who died Dec. 14 at 83.
Tragically, yet oddly fittingly, Ertegun died of a head injury suffered in
October when he fell down at a Rolling Stones concert. A mover and a shaker
until the end, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer signed and nurtured rockers such
as the Stones and Led Zeppelin, as well as some of the biggest names in soul and
R&B, including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding.
Jagger remembered his boss at Atlantic as "the wicked uncle with the
wicked chuckle," saying he could never keep up with the dapper Turk.
The event's host, Bette Midler, said that Ertegun could "charm the birds
out of the trees," and reminisced how she had grown up on Atlantic music,
tunes that "promised there was a party somewhere."
As one would expect, "Ahmet Ertegun: A Celebration" was largely a
musical affair.
Performers included Clapton, who led a band featuring New Orleans pianist Dr.
John through Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone to Love" and
Stick McGhee's "Drinkin' Wine Spo-dee-o-dee"; Phil Collins, who sang
"In the Air Tonight" and then, joined by the rest of Genesis, "Follow
You, Follow Me"; Ben E. King, who crooned "Don't Play That Song,"
which Ertegun helped write; Crosby, Stills & Nash, who took on the Beatles'
"In My Life" before Neil Young joined them for "Helplessly Hoping";
Young, who coupled with Stephen Stills on "Mr. Soul"; Stevie Nicks,
who sang a double feature of "Stand Back" and Led Zeppelin's
"Rock and Roll"; Solomon Burke; and, adding a contemporary vibe, Kid
Rock.
Rock, who also attended Ertegun's funeral in his native Istanbul, took on the
Wilson Pickett classic "In the Midnight Hour" and Sam and Dave's
"I Thank You," with the help of Sam Moore.
"I hope that today's musicians have someone like Ahmet," Young said.
Other notables on hand to celebrate Ertegun's legacy and pay their respect's
to the late impresario's wife, Mica, included New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg,
designer Oscar de la Renta, Ray director Taylor Hackford, David Geffen,
Henry Kissinger and Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner.

RIP
Doris Richards
The mother of rocker Keith Richards has died at the age of 91 of cancer.
The Rolling Stone, 63, had been keeping a vigil at his mother Doris's bedside
since her diagnosis.
Richards extended his stay in London to be with his mother, who died peacefully
in her sleep on Saturday.
The star's spokesman, Bernard Doherty, said: “Doris Richards, aged 91, mother
of Rolling Stone Keith Richards, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday
21 April 2007.
“Family and friends request that their privacy is respected at this time.”

Doris
Richards Funeral Held in Sussex
May 1
Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards said his final goodbye to his mother
Doris Richards - who died aged 91 on April 21 - at Sussex's Chichester
crematorium, Tuesday.
Keith, who kept a bedside vigil until his beloved mum lost her battle with
cancer last month, was comforted by family and fellow bandmate Ronnie Wood
during the service.
Doris separated from Keith's father Bert - who passed away in 2002 aged 84 -
in 1962.
Before her death she had been living with the rocker's stepfather William in
Kent. Doris fell ill around the same time Keith, 63, underwent brain surgery
after falling out of a tree in Fiji last year.
Doris was responsible for buying her son his first guitar on his 15th
birthday, setting him on the path to rock 'n' roll success.
Her father, Gus Dupree, toured the UK as a jazz musician and gave grandson
Keith his earliest guitar lessons.

Pirates too long on screen time, short on Keith
Critics say Richards' brief appearance is the best thing about 'self-indulgent'
film
Friday, May 25, 2007
The Sun's Katherine Monk gave Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End 31/2
stars out of 5, and said the movie's narrative and drama were weighed down by
a bad case of megalomania. Here's what some other critics thought:
The good news first: Keith Richards totally rocks it playing pirate daddy
to Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow. The deep rumble of his voice and those
hooded eyes that narrowly open like the creaky gates of hell make him what the
rest of this three-peat is not: authentically scary . . . . So what's the bad
news? Richards is onscreen for barely two minutes.
-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
The last 60 minutes offer adventure as rousing as anything provided in
either of the previous instalments. Unfortunately, that doesn't account for
the other 108 minutes of this gorged, self-indulgent, and uneven production.
-- James Berardinelli, ReelViews
POTC:AWE is a lukewarm maelstrom of secret agendas, double-crossings,
tricky alliances, back stabbings, political conspiracies, warring factions,
etc. -- none of which is the least bit captivating or, by and large,
comprehensible.
-- Nathan Lee, Village Voice
Such a tangled thicket of overwritten, labyrinthine mythology, backstabbing
betrayals and mixed motivations that a massive chunk of the running time is
devoted to characters standing around on boats, trying like hell to explain
the plot to one another.
-- Sean Burns, Philadelphia Weekly

success story has retired after 37 years with the veteran rockers.
Prince Rupert Loewenstein - nick-named the 'Human Calculator' - has stepped

Having got the band out of several scrapes with the Inland Revenue and record
company contracts, Loewenstein has overseen the band's affairs as they've

Ronnie gets
Romany gypsy caravan
Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood woke up to find the £40,000 traditional
painted caravan parked in his drive, left there as a surprise from his wife Jo
for his 60th birthday.
A source told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "Ronnie rolled out of the
house in the morning and burst out laughing when he saw it. He's delighted with
the caravan.
"He has Romany gypsy roots and always said he wanted one."
The ageing rocker joked he might even take the caravan on tour this summer.
The source added: "The Stones are playing the Isle of Wight Festival in
the summer so he'll have a perfect chance to give it a good road test."
Ronnie, who turns 60 on June 1, was born to Romany gypsy parents and spent
some of his childhood living on tugboats.
Former model Jo married Ronnie in 1985. The couple have two children together
- Leah and Tyrone - and both have one child from previous relationships.

Martin Scorsese Turns the Camera on The Rolling Stones
The Oscar-Winning Filmmaker's New Concert Film 'Shine A Light' Features
Legendary Rock 'n Roll Band
HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- On Sept. 21, 2007, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Martin
Scorsese and the world's greatest rock 'n roll band, The Rolling Stones, unite
to bring audiences the most extraordinary musical film event of the year.
That's the day Paramount Classics, in association with Concert Productions
International and Shangri-La Entertainment, will release "Shine A
Light," a look at The Rolling Stones, the band that defined the very idea
of what a rock & roll band is, live through the eyes of Martin Scorsese.
The concert film will be released nationally on Sept. 21. Fortissimo Films is
the international sales agent.
It's hard to overestimate the importance of The Rolling Stones in rock &
roll history. The group, which formed in London in 1962, distilled so much of
the music that had come before it and has exerted a decisive influence on so
much that has come after. Only a handful of musicians in any genre achieve
that stature, and the Stones stand proudly among them.
For "Shine A Light," which was filmed over two days at the intimate
Beacon Theater in New York City in fall 2006, Scorsese assembled a legendary
team of cinematographers to capture the raw energy of the legendary band.
The Director of Photography, Oscar winner Robert Richardson ("The Aviator,"
"JFK"), supervised the camera team comprised of several highly
acclaimed cinematographers, including Oscar winner John Toll ("The Last
Samurai," "Braveheart"), Oscar winner Andrew Lesnie ("The
Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "King Kong"), Oscar nominee Stuart
Dryburgh ("The Piano," "The Painted Veil"), Oscar nominee
Robert Elswit ("Magnolia," "Good Night and Good Luck"),
Oscar nominee Emmanuel Lubezki ("Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate
Events," "Sleepy Hollow") and Ellen Kuras ("Summer of
Sam," "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind").
The film was edited by David Tedeschi, who most recently worked with Scorsese
on the acclaimed Bob Dylan documentary "No Direction Home: Bob
Dylan."
Financed by Steve Bing's Shangri-La Entertainment and long-time Rolling Stones
tour promoter Michael Cohl's Concert Productions International, the film was
produced by Victoria Pearman, Michael Cohl, Zane Weiner and Steve Bing.
The executive producers are Rolling Stones members Mick Jagger, Keith
Richards, Charlie Watts and Ron Wood, with Jane Rose serving as co-executive
producer.

Read the great story from the area around Brussels the last few days, and
what happened there.
Press conference Friday at 6pm.
The press conference will take place at Vilvoorde. The band arrived around
5.30 and Michael Cohl as well. The press conference also included a few songs
that the Stones played.
As there were many press people from all over Europe, the organizers were
forced to do it in two parts. The Rolling Stones answered a lot of questions
among the new DVD box as well. After these two sittings the band played three
songs in the studios just behind.

Keith Richards
says The Rolling Stones aren't in it for the money
Rock legend Keith Richards has slammed suggestions that The Rolling
Stones endure grueling hours of touring solely for the vast income it brings
in.
The 63-year-old insists that there is much more to performing night after
night than the financial rewards - which are said to be approaching.
The Rolling Stones are in the midst of the A Bigger Bang tour, which
after continuing for over two years is said to be one of the longest and
highest grossing having pulled in over $436 million to date.
Richards says, "I don't think you could get these guys to do it
just for the money. It's still a bloody adventure. Every time you set sail on
these things, they're never the same and I love to see the world and I hope
the world loves to see me.
You get this insane idea that you can only do this between 17
and 25, but y'know, I'm not a tennis player. I'll show you how long it can be
done.

by Ricardo Aldarondo DV San Sebastián
Smiling, discreet and each one in a car arrived at the hotel Maria Cristina,
six and quarter of afternoon of yesterday, the four Rolling Stones and its séquito.
Smiling, discreet, each one in their car and without no sense of expectancy
to the entrance of the hotel, arrived at the Maria Cristina at six and quarter
from afternoon from yesterday, the four components of the Rolling Stones, with
their séquito. Only three quinceañeras, that ended up obtaining an autograph
of very same Keith Richards, and a pair of people who happened that way,
attended the brief moment in which they were let see his Majestys, nothing
satanic, and good natured and yes smiling.
Mick Jagger, with simple and classic blue shirt, saluted affectionate with
the hand. Charlie Watts, with chaquetilla chandalera, smiled holding in his hand
a postcard of San Sebastián. Ron Wood went something more serious, behind Keith
Richards, but he infected himself of the laughter of the pirate, who
as always, was most showy. Adorned with a shirt with the English flag in
the front and the initials of Great Britain in a sleeve, Richards immediately
set to sign an autograph to the three only girls who were there for asking for
it. They gave their notebook to him and they did a photo to him with the moving
body. They were not believed it.
Immediately the four inside the hotel entered and they went to its suites.
Minutes later, the kind personnel of the hotel started up again to receive to
the bus in which the other musicians and the assistants came from stairs, more
than 40 people altogether.
The airplane had arrived minutes after five and the average one from
afternoon at the airport from Biarritz. Four dark cars, two small vans and a bus
were the vehicles of a company donostiarra that hoped to them from average hour
and before the arrival of the enormous airplane. When the hour of the landing
approached, the vehicles entered the track and they approached almost until the
stairway. The four components of the Rolling lowered mixed with the rest of
troupe, Jagger with a jersey that soon took off in the car. Each one of them
entered its vehicle and the retinue left quickly towards San Sebastián.
The requests for the cars did not have anything special. Only waters and
tissues. Mick Jagger is the unique one who had requested that was something in
the vehicle more: a notebook, pencils and Fisherman's caramels. The organization
of the Festival of Jazz is in charge to coordinate the movements of the band and
their equipment in the city, in contact with the organization of the Rolling.
The Stones is going away to apparently be left two nights in the hotel and
they will go away of Donostia Sunday. They have reserved to two third parts of
the hotel Maria Cristina, 72 rooms and suites. It is an affluent place known by
the British band, because they already spendt the night in him in 1998 when they
were going to act in Bilbao in a concert that finally was suspended, and at
night previous to his concert in Santiago de Compostela in 1999.
Like in previous occasions, nothing was planned yesterday for the stay of the
Rolling. In the other occasions, rather they were shut in in the rooms, although
Keith Richards lowered to an establishment of the Boulevard at daybreak and Mick
Jagger visited the Akelarre restaurant. And well that him had to please, because
only yesterday he requested to go to have supper again to the restaurant of
Igeldo, that now has three stars. Ron Wood, on the other hand, chose the
Berasategi restaurant of the Kursaal to have supper. Other members of the
equipment, nothing else to arrive, requested something to eat and from the
cafeteria of the hotel diverse fruits, cheese, pintxos and rice with milk raised
to them.
Meanwhile, in the stage of Anoeta the works of assembly of the scene were
completed yesterday in the evening. “To eleven at night he will be everything
finished mounting”, explained the person in charge of production of Rock Star,
Joseba Iribar, that was satisfied because “everything has gone as planned and
without problems”. In the morning of today, it arrives backline, the monitors
and the instruments of the Rolling, and will be dedicated to the sound tests.

Sweet Keith story
Peter and Monika from Germany went to Brussels for the opening show, stayed at
the Conrad. They are hard core Keith fans and brought him several presents.
They met him twice, and he signed a few photos. However, their biggest dream
was to have Keith's signature on this lovely Telecaster.
One night, Bill and Jane Rose came up to us, while we were having a cigarette
outside the hotel bar. And started talking. Peter, who does not speak much
English, managed to tell Jane about his dream. She was touched, and she made
one phone call. She took the Telecaster with her and came back after ten
minutes. Keith had signed it.
To Peter and Monika. One Love Keith Richards, 2007.
I was deeply moved by what he did. The sweetest man one can imagine.
Hope to see you in London. Going to all three shows, Hot tickets, Keithside
all three nights.

Auction
for Keith Richards book tops $7M
by Matthew Flamm
The battle for Keith Richards’ autobiography has turned into the hottest
auction of the summer. Bidding for a book by the Rolling Stones’ famed
founding member, co-song writer and rhythm guitarist has reached $7.1 million,
according to publishing industry sources.
London-based literary agent Ed Victor has been conducting the auction in New
York this week, inviting just three houses to offer bids, according to one
insider. HarperCollins and Little, Brown, a division of the Hachette Book Group
USA, are the ones left vying for the title.
The $7 million offer would be for world English language rights. Translation
rights, which Mr. Victor will sell separately, will push the total advance even
higher.
Some publishing insiders were shaking their heads at how high the bidding has
gone.
“This is Bill Clinton money,” says an executive not involved in the bidding.
Knopf paid $10 million to $12 million for former President Clinton’s
autobiography in 2001. “All the Stones books have covered him,” the
executive adds.
Though a shelf full of books on the Rolling Stones has been published over the
years, Mr. Richards’ own story could draw both old fans and new readers. The
British press has said it would be “the holy grail of rock books.”
Mr. Richards, who had a bit part in the recent Pirates of the Caribbean
movie, is a colorful figure known for his keen musicianship and decades of
excessive drug and alcohol use.
Some reports have questioned whether “Keef,” as he’s known in Britain,
would remember enough of his past to write a book. In May, Mr. Victor told the New
York Post that memory wouldn’t be an issue since Mr. Richards would
collaborate with his friend of 30 years, the noted non-fiction author James Fox.
A call to Mr. Victor was not returned.
HarperCollins declined to comment. Executives at Little, Brown could not be
reached.

Paint It
Black, You Devil: the Rolling Stones’ Jagger w/Best-Of Due new CD out Oct.
2nd.
You’d be forgiven for that great big yawn you emitted when word arrived of
the impending release of The Very Best of Mick Jagger (Atlantic/Rhino).
Youngsters might query, “Isn’t that the old dude from the Rolling Stones
with the paternity suits?” while old-timers who’ve actually heard a
Mick Jagger solo album typically go, “Don’t quit your day job, dude.”
So against all reasonable odds, the 17-track collection holds up fairly
nicely. “Memo From Turner,” from the ’70 film Performance and
featuring Ry Cooder on slide guitar, has long been an essential part of the
Jagger canon precisely because it’s so Stones-like. Less-so is the Golden
Globe-winning “Old Habits Die Hard,” (from that shitty 2004 remake of Alfie),
but hey, that’s what happen when you work with Dave Stewart instead of Ry
Cooder. There’s also Jagger’s smokin’ ‘n’ tokin’ ’78 duet with
Peter Tosh, a cover of the Temptations' hit "(You Got To Walk And) Don't
Look Back," and the homoerotic ’85 team-up with Bowie, Martha & The
Vandellas' classic "Dancing in the Street," which was released as a
single as part of the Live Aid effort to raise funds for famine relief in
Ethiopia.
The bulk of the collection is culled from Jagger’s four solo LPs: She's
The Boss (1985), Primitive Cool (1987), Wandering Spirit
(1993), and Goddess In The Doorway (2001). By cherrypicking the more
inspired material from what’s admittedly mostly a load of dreck, the CD’s
compilers may be giving the impression that those albums were stronger than they
ever were, but hey, that’s why God created best-ofs: as revisionist documents
that, not so coincidentally, free up a bit of extra space on your record shelf.
For collectors, the inclusion of three unreleased tracks may be the chief
reason to cheer. Here’s the run-down, courtesy of the record label:
The sizzling "Too Many Cooks (Spoil The Soup)," was produced by John
Lennon and recorded by Jagger in 1973 in Los Angeles. The track features an
all-star lineup that includes guitarists Danny Kortchmar and Jesse Ed Davis,
keyboardist Al Kooper, bassist Jack Bruce, drummer Jim Keltner, and, on
background vocals, singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson. It has never previously
been released.
The album's two additional previously unreleased tracks are demos from
Jagger's Wandering Spirit session with producer Rick Rubin. Jagger
had sketched out "Charmed Life" (with his daughter Karis on backing
vocals) but then decided the track didn't fit with the rest of the album. The
rhythmically charged version on The Very Best Of has been remixed by
producer Ashley Beedle. "Taking the bare bones of the song and getting to
the finished version with Ashley Beedle was a great creative collaboration,"
remarks Jagger.
Meanwhile, as they were making Wandering Spirit, Rubin suggested that
Jagger spend a day recording with The Red Devils, a torrid L.A. blues band.
"The difficult decision I was faced with when listening to the tracks I
recorded with the Red Devils, and having to choose only one, reminded me what
a great band they were," says Jagger. One of the results of that session
is Jagger's previously unreleased rollicking version of Sonny Boy Williamson's
"Checkin' Up On My Baby."
There ya have it, Stones (and Mick) fans. The CD is due October 2 —that’s
just a shot away.

Stones Planet Blue Lena in London
Tim Ries show in London:
Just back from the Tim Ries gig at the Mean Fiddler on Charing Cross Rd. Next
to the famed Astoria.
It was a pretty packed house tonight and it was
a special show with some Stones related auctions and stuff going for charity.
Darryl played bass tonight and the surprise guest was none other
than Lisa Fischer! She dueted with Bernard on Ruby Tuesday to end the show and
they encouraged the whole room to sing along.
Blondie was in the audience tonight as well. Saw a lot of old friends and met
some new people.
Thanks to those who gave me gifts and to those who bought me a beer! Today is
Stones show #2, and sadly the final one for me.
For the next shows we have Blue Lena in London. Unfortunately it was planned
that even Charlotte should have been there, but due to work and an important
deadline, she was forced to work - and update the site.
Yesterday Blue Lena visited the Covent Garden as well as the Stones hotel to pick up tickets. Blue Lena reports that she had a beer with Blondie,
and kisses from Bernard and Tim in the Lobby. Went on a Thames cruise, and went
to Jack Horners Pub to meet other Stones fans. Also met Philippe who is doing a
film project about fans.
More reports to come during the next days, starting with the first show
tonite August 21. Tonite August 23 the second
show is on. Read all here from the show.

Stones
leave fans hanging after marathon world tour
The Rolling Stones ended their two-year world tour in their home town of
London on Sunday, leaving fans wondering if it would be their last ever
show.
Such speculation has dogged the veteran rock band since the 1960s, but it
intensifies each tour to the point where it is now a running joke between
the group and journalists.
Predictably, frontman Mick Jagger made no grand announcements during the
band's two-hour show at the O2 arena, in Greenwich, southeast London. The
venue is just eight miles from where they performed their first ever show,
at the Marquee Club, in July 1962.
Instead, the 64-year-old singer, who barely broke sweat as he jumped
around the stage, thanked fans for sticking with the band amid "fire
and ice and storms and trees, and God knows what."
he "trees" comment related to a mishap in April 2006 when
guitarist Keith Richards slipped while on a break in Fiji. He required head
surgery, which forced the band to reschedule its European tour set for that
summer. At the time, it was reported that he fell from a palm tree, though
he later denied that.
Since the "Bigger Bang" world tour began in Boston on August
21, 2005, observers have wondered about the health of the death-defying
guitarist, who has been friends with Jagger since childhood.
To the consternation of fans in Helsinki earlier this month, Richards
actually toppled over on stage a few times. But the 63-year-old played with
vigor on Sunday on such classic tunes as "Brown Sugar" and "Jumpin'
Jack Flash."
Richards said in the latest issue of the British music magazine Mojo that
he is taking the anti-seizure medication Dilantin because of the head injury,
and had abstained from cocaine for about 18 months. He continues to drink
and smoke heavily.
For perhaps the first time, Richards and fellow guitarist Ronnie Wood did
not smoke on stage on Sunday, following new anti-smoking regulations. But
Richards could be seen taking a few hurried puffs off-stage.
TRIUMPH, TRAGEDY
The marathon tour comprised 146 performances in 31 countries and Puerto
Rico. First-time stops included mainland China, Montenegro, Romania and
Serbia, as well as last year's Super Bowl in Detroit.
Along the way, Jagger and Richards each lost a parent, and Wood his older
brother. Last October their former record label boss, Atlantic Records
co-founder Ahmet Ertegun, slipped backstage during their concert in New
York, fell into a coma and died seven weeks later.
The North American shows, which accounted for just over half the
performances, grossed $300 million and attracted 2.2 million people,
according to Pollstar, a concert trade publication. Their well-reviewed
album, "A Bigger Bang," did not fare as well, slipping off the
charts soon after its September 2005 release, a victim of the depressed
state of the music industry.
Next on the band's agenda is the April 2008 release of Martin Scorsese's
concert documentary, "Shine a Light." Some fans hope that will be
a good excuse for the Stones to tour again, but the band is not saying
anything. /Reuters

Mick Jagger new album
The
Very Best Of Mick Jagger, the first overview
of his distinguished solo career, is set for release in the U.S. on October 2, on
Atlantic/Rhino
Records. It’s a vivid reminder of the compelling gifts that brought Jagger
fame in the first place. As an embodiment of all that rock’n’roll can mean,
he is virtually without peer and that is made plain on this compelling 17-track
collection, which includes three previously unreleased performances.
But Mick, for better or worse,
is also one of those figures who has far eclipsed the realm of rock ’n’ roll
to become one of the most recognizable names and faces in the world, as
celebrated for who he is as for what he’s accomplished. Indeed, he is a
“musician and songwriter,” one of the greatest singers in rock ’n’ roll
history, and a restless, adventurous artist.

Rolling
Stones get Guiness satisfaction
by Paul Majendie
LONDON (Reuters) - The Rolling Stones may be ageing rockers but their pulling
power is undimmed -- they topped the charts with the world's most successful
music tour in the latest edition of Guinness World Records. (photo above Jim
Cooper)
Giving a handy fillip to their pension funds, the group's "A Bigger Bang
Tour" took $437 million dollars to give them a new record.
Madonna also made the annual compendium as the most successful female artist
-- her 60-date "Confessions" tour grossed almost $200 million. That
meant she earned more than $3 million per concert.
Guinness invariably boasts a string of offbeat and bizarre records, and the
latest edition which comes out on Friday was no exception with entries for the
highest and deepest concerts.
British band Jamiroquai, fronted by lead singer Jay Kay, performed at 35,000
feet in a specially converted Boeing 737 to an audience of pop competition
winners.
British singer Katie Melua and her band headed below the waves, giving a
concert 303 meters (994 feet) below sea level aboard an oil rig off the coast of
Norway to gain her niche in Guinness.

gigs in
Argentina.
I left Porto Alegre

at 9:40 am. My friend Marcelo Tejera (viejoRolinga) welcomed me and
invited me to his

.
We took a taxi to go from the
Ezeiza

to Caballito neighborhood. The taxi driver was Jorge, a former
drummer of a local blues band, who listens to John Mayall on his CD player.
On our way to Caballito, we talked about Marcelo's recent meeting
with Andrew Loog Oldham at a theme bar called 40x5 in
Buenos Aires
. Marcelo told me he asked Andrew to sign the album Flowers. Andrew
agreed to give his autograph but scribbled on Brian Jones's picture.
At the
Stones

I saw Marcelo's impressing amount of memorabilia. He has 975 DVDs,
hundreds of CDs, flags, posters and pictures of the Stones that are
spread all over his apartment. After getting to know the
Stones

it's time to get ready for Bernard's show, which will be held on
Tuesday (30/11), at

This band
has no fucking name!"
by Phyllis Pollack
On December 9, 2007, the Mozambique Restaurant And Coastal Lounge in Laguna
Beach, California was the scene of a somewhat historic gig in its own right.
“This band has no fucking name!” proclaimed Rolling Stones vocalist
Bernard Fowler, as he introduced the band’s core performers, comprised of
guitarist Waddy Wachtel of the X-Pensive Winos, Rolling Stones bassist Darryl
Jones, Stones vocalist and guitarist Blondie Chaplin, and former Tom Petty
drummer Phil Jones, who has played percussion on numerous albums, including
the Rolling Stones’ 1994 release, Voodoo Lounge. “This is the first time
we’ve ever been able to get her here,” said Fowler, referring to Rolling
Stones vocalist Lisa Fischer, whose powerful performance with the band that
night could have easily set off title waves in the nearby ocean. Ivan Spiers,
one of the club’s partners, joined the band for the evening’s finale,
“Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” The event was held as a benefit for victims
of some of the recent fires that have destroyed numerous homes in Southern
California. “Stones Planet’s” next issue (#25) will feature the
complete story and exclusive photos by Phyllis Pollack.
