Through The Past Darkly
Rolling Stones Exhibits Let It Bleed In New York, L.A. And
Beyond
by
Phyllis Pollack
It’s
just a shot away. Ethan Russell’s “Let It Bleed” photo exhibits,
commemorating the 1969 Rolling Stones tour, are currently being held until
January 15 at the Morrison Hotel Gallery at 124 Prince St. in New York City, and
an exhibit is also currently showing at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in Los
Angeles at 7517 Sunset Blvd. through January 27, 2008. A third exhibit will be
held at the San Francisco Art Exchange LLC, located at 458 Geary Street in San
Francisco, which will kick off with a reception on February 23, and it is
expected be open for approximately one month.
Exhibits are also being planned in Rotterdam and in London.
These
exhibitions are being held in a timely fashion, in conjunction with the release
of Russell’s recently published book, “Let It Bleed,” a massive book that
contains countless photos of the Stones, including shots from the band’s
legendary free concert at Altamont Speedway. This extensive book measures 12
inches by 15 inches. The 420-page tome, which contains commentary written by
Russell, is limited to a run of 2600 copies, which are each numbered and signed
by the author.
At
the exhibits, reprints of many of Russell’s famous photographs, printed on
archival paper, may be purchased. All photographs that are sold are taken
directly from the original negative or color slide. Ethan Russell has lensed
some of the most recognized photos of the Rolling Stones, including the
oxymoronic image of Keith Richards, standing next to a sign stating, “Patience
please, a drug free America comes first.”
While
Russell’s photo credits include such memorable photo portraits as the album
cover of the Stones “Through The Past Darkly,” there are many other notable
photos containing Russell’s credits, which revisit and document the history of
the Rolling Stones. In addition to
shooting the 1969 tour, Russell also photographed the band’s “Rock And Roll
Circus,” and he toured with the band in1972. In addition to countless photos
of the Rolling Stones, Russell’s book also contains shots of some of the
people who worked for the band during the 1969 tour, including Georgia “Jo”
Bergman and Chip Monck. Also seen is the late Ian Stewart.
Russell’s
Stones photos define the era in which they were shot, and capture rock and roll
history in a unique and memorable fashion.
Russell has been nominated for several Grammy awards, and within his extensive
resume, he also shot photos of The Who, and the entire Beatles’ documentary,
“Let It Be.”
Russell
currently lives in Marin, California.
The
book “Let It Bleed can be purchased at the Rhino Pop Up Store at 8032 W. 3rd
St in L.A. Orders can also be placed by credit card at 800-546-3670 or
818-238-6255. It is available in a standard and in a deluxe version.
"The two above shots that contain multiple Ethan Russell
photos were shot for “Stones Planet” by Phyllis Pollack."

The Rolling Stones concert film SHINE A LIGHT
from Oscar® winning director Martin Scorsese will have its world premiere on
February 7, 2008 when it opens the Berlin Film Festival. Following its

Guy and integrated with rarely seen archival footage, SHINE A LIGHT gives

Remix
Of Rolling Stones Track To Appear In Upcoming Film
by
Phyllis Pollack
Exactly
one week before the release of Shine A
Light, Martin Scorsese’s highly anticipated documentary film about the
Rolling Stones, a reminder of the Glimmer Twins will appear in another film. A
remixed version of the Rolling Stones’ classic track “You Can’t Always Get
What You Want” will be heard in the upcoming Columbia Pictures theatrical
release of 21, which will debut in
theaters on March 28.
The
remix version of the track as heard in 21
will be available exclusively available on iTunes for one week, beginning on
February 19. After the week ends, the song will be available through all digital
retail outlets. It is now also provided through all mobile providers as a
downloadable mastertone, and as a video ringer, using footage from the film. For
those who want to buy the remix on a disc, the track will also be available on
the Columbia Records soundtrack album for the film, which will be released on
March 18.
The
original version of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” was released on
the 1969 Stones album Let It Bleed,
and it was on the flip side of the staple 7-inch single “Honky Tonk Women.”
Due to the format of radio, more than two minutes of the album’s
version was edited from the seven-inch version of the track. The groundbreaking
recording of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” featured the London Bach
Choir, Nanette Newman, Madelaine Bell, and Doris Troy on vocals. Its brilliant
choral arrangement was orchestrated by the late Academy
Award winning film score composer,
Jack Nitzsche, who left behind a legacy of work with a slew of artists, ranging
from Neil Young to Jackie DeShannon. Nitzsche also orchestrated a numerous
motion picture soundtracks. Nitzsche contributed varying amounts of work on a
number of Stones albums in the band’s earlier years, and after a long absence
from working with the group, the last Stones album on which he was involved was Emotional
Rescue.
The
duo of David and Stephen Dawaele, the two brothers otherwise known as Soulwax,
were chosen by ABKCO to remix the track for the film. This remix follows
ABCKO’s successful release of The
Darjeeling Limited soundtrack and
work from the iTunes track packs release of music from the Showtime
series Californication. Having also
worked under the names 2 Many DJ’s and the Flying Dewaele Brothers, Soulwax
has released several albums and remixes of tracks by artists including Daft Punk
and Robbie Williams. The remix was recorded under the direction of ABKCO at
Soulwax’s studio in Ghent, Belgium.
An
adventure film, 21 stars Kate
Bosworth, Jim Sturgess, Laurence Fishburne and Kevin Spacey.
Peter Steinfeld and Allan Loeb’s screenplay is based on the book Bringing
Down the House, by Ben Mezrich. The plot was inspired by the true story of a
shy M.I.T. student needing to finance his college tuition, hence joining a group
of students who return to Vegas every weekend to crack the code to win in the
casinos. Directed by Robert Luketic, the film is produced by Dana Brunetti,
Kevin Spacey and Michael De Luca.
A
segment of the original version of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”
has also been heard during the award-winning television show House,
in which British actor Hugh Laurie plays a Vicodin addicted physician.
Laurie’s issues are a recurring theme on the show, wherein doctors try to
diagnose illnesses from cancer to systemic lupus.
Ironically, Laurie, himself, also contributed to a remake of the song on
the television show’s official soundtrack album.
“You
Can’t Always Get What You Want” has been covered by many artists, including
reggae artists Steele Pulse and Aretha Franklin, although also Franklin recorded
a much more powerful version of “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” culminating her
remake into a masterful single that featured drummer Steve Jordan, Rolling
Stones guitarists Ron Wood and Keith Richards. The resulting single from that
session was used as the soundtrack’s single for the film of the same name,
which starred Whoopie Goldberg.
Franklin
’s relentlessly transcendent version of the
song was produced by Keith Richards.

Jagger mix-up
Former U.S. presidential hopeful MIKE HUCKABEE was left red-faced at a recent
election rally when he proudly introduced SIR MICK JAGGER to the stage - only
to realise it was the rocker's brother, CHRIS. The Republican met Chris Jagger
at a cafe in Miami, Florida (end February, early March) and, believing him to
be his more famous older brother Mick, invited him to perform a couple of
tracks at his campaign rally later that evening. At the event, Huckabee told
the crowd: "We have a surprise visitor here tonight. Will you welcome Mr
Mick Jagger, who will sing two of his band's songs with us." But the
audience was instead treated to a set by 60-year-old Chris, a musician in his
own right, who played along with the joke - much to the former senator's
embarrassment. Huckabee announced on Tuesday (04Mar08) that he is quitting the
race for the White House, conceding defeat to his fellow Republican, Senator
John MCCain. (source: contactmusic.com) with thanks to Sandra
