Olympia review – July 11, 2003:

by Joelle B.

After 30 years of Stones mania, your expectations are always high but you also know you can get disappointed… But this gig was excellent!

First of all, I was able to get a ticket for this show thanks to an English friend, whose girlfriend could not make it for the show. I will remain very grateful to him for ever!

After a few (!) drinks in a nearby pub, we join the long waiting line to enter the Olympia theatre and spend the time talking to the other “happy few” (British, French, etc…).

A cameraman from the RS organization even films my fellow English gentleman to get his impressions about the forthcoming gig (and makes him sign a disclaimer before…)

Once we move along the line, we can see many unhappy, sad faces of fans desperately waiting for a miracle… while French VIP’s enter through another side… Anger is rising inside of me when I see some of these VIP’s…

And security is very tight, removing all the cameras etc…

Once inside, it’s a bit late and we won’t be right in front of the stage! Never mind, as the Olympia is a small theatre, we will see well!

The opening act, the Burn, from Britain, starts with delay but offers a good surprise (compared with the Stereophonics the previous Monday in Bercy…). I don’t know them at all, but I think they are talented. Many influences going from Pink Floyd, the Stones and even Neil Young. Some songs even sound very bluesy. You can always rely on the good British “breed”!!!

They end up at 9 PM and the technicians start removing their equipment.

The hard-core fans which we are, think that the real thing will then start around 9.30 PM… but their Satanic Majesties will be up to their reputation and won’t start until 10 PM… Our feet are already suffering…

Suddenly the first chords of “Start Me Up” resound and the Majesties appear on stage, lead by Monsieur Jagger, a bit nervous at the beginning of the show… He even yells heavily at one of the technicians during this first song (a technical problem, I suppose.).

The crowd is ecstatic! For the next two hours, time will pass just like in a moment. Songs come very rapidly one after the other, and the show is full of surprises, like lesser know tunes from albums of the 70’s and 80’s, plus the wonderful “Everybody need Somebody” and “That’s how strong my love is”.

The Stones seem to enjoy themselves, they play in tune (fortunately since the gig is filmed… DVD ???). They are smiling. Mick does a lot of talking in French, then switches back to English since “the show must go on”!

Keith will speak in English, very rapidly and with a low voice, as usual… But he will offer brilliant versions of “The Nearness of You” and “Before they make me run “.

After this, everything goes too quickly. I know that time is flying and I can’t do more than clapping my hands, having no control whatsoever on the situation.

One good thing: when “Honky Tonk Women” is played, the audience manages to cover Jagger’s voice and sing the chorus the proper  way… You know what I mean… Jagger’s “Honky Tonk – Konky Tonk” chorus is covered, washed away by our “HOOOONNNN” choruses. Well done Paris!!!

A few old (but gold) hits to finish the show. One Encore with a wonderful “Jumping Jack Flash” and there we are… left alone… getting out of the Olympia… aching feet and legs, no more voice, but very HAPPY!

Never thought I would ever be able to see them in such a small theatre… and that was wonderful!

Not the last time I hope…

Joelle (from Paris)
