It was like the atmosphere of a big soccer match before the beginning of the
concert of the Rolling Stones in Milan, July 11th, the first date of the
European leg of the Bigger Bang tour. The stadium was full and the people were very
hot. As was the temperature...
At 9.10 the show began and Keith Richards entered the stadium as an Emperor of
rock, playing the riff of JJF. The eyes of all the fans are on him: how is he
after the surgery? "Keef" is in great shape, smiles, he is very
quiet, and plays in his best way.
Enter the band, Jagger looks like he is in his twenties. He speaks
Italian ("Ciao campioni del mondo!") and the first surprise is a
very moving Italian version of "As Tears Go By", "Con le mie
lacrime". Keith is sitting, playing the acoustic guitar, he smiles and
jokes with Mick. Wood is very refined, Watts doesn't lose a beat. "Midnight
Rambler" arrives like an emotional earthquake. Then Richards plays
"Before They Make Me Run" and "Slipping Away", pretty well.
Then begins "Miss you", the Rolling Stones are playing on the
B-stage, in the middle of the crowd. Over the stage it is raining everything:
Italian flags (Mick catches them all), hats, apparel and so on. "E' una
serata grandiosa!", he says. Then the last songs. "Start me up"
and all the stadium is dancing. Mick up and down the stage, Keith also runs up
and down the stairs. Before the encore on the big screens we can see all the
goals of the Italian Soccer team. People are out of their heads. Here it
comes "Satisfaction", one of the best versions I have ever heard. At
the end, the last surprise: Materazzi and Del Piero, players in the Italian
Soccer Team appear on the stage. They sing with Mick the famous tune of the
Italian fans during the Fifa World Cup.
Fireworks!
The game is over.

Aging and ailing, yet Rolling Stones rock Milan

They may have a combined age of 248 years, and a guitarist who has
just recovered from head injuries sustained when falling out of a tree,
but the Rolling Stones proved on Tuesday that they can still entertain.
Opening the European leg of their "Bigger Bang" tour,
delayed for over a month after 62-year-old guitarist Keith Richards
underwent surgery in New Zealand, the famous foursome rocked a packed
San Siro soccer stadium in Milan.
Fellow guitarist Ron Wood, 59, also checked into a London
rehabilitation clinic last month for treatment for alcohol abuse, but
both men said on Monday they were feeling good and ready to get back on
the touring bandwagon.
Lead singer Mick Jagger congratulated the crowd on Italy's weekend
victory in the soccer World Cup championship, and two members of the
winning squad -- Marco Materazzi and Alessandro Del Piero -- were
invited on stage at the end of the two-hour show.
Referring to Richards' accident and the infamous head-butting
incident involving Materazzi and French player Zinedine Zidane in the
World Cup final, Jagger, speaking in Italian, joked:
"Materazzi and Richards have something in common tonight -- they
both recently had head-related problems."
The crowd waved thousands of Italian flags as the foursome performed
many of their old classics and a smattering of newer material.
Richards was the first on stage, wearing his trademark headband and a
shirt open at the chest.
The night began with "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and ended with
"(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," and, apart from short
mini-breaks between songs, the aging rockers showed few signs of slowing
down.
Since the 2005 release of their latest album "A Bigger
Bang," the Rolling Stones have performed on three continents before
a combined total of 4.5 million fans, according to their tour director.
Their biggest show was at Copacabana Beach in Brazil, where they
played before 1 1/2 million people, and they also performed in Beijing
for the first time.
The group, with hits like "Get Off of My Cloud," has sold
an estimated 240 million albums since forming in 1962, and is regarded
as one of the world's most popular and influential bands.

I 'vecchi' Stones accendono Milano
carrellata dei suoi pezzi classici, da 'Brown sugar' a 'Simphaty for the devil'
